SX/4 - Which Cherokee tank do I modify to fit?
« on: December 20, 2013, 10:14:12 AM »
So the other day I went to Mr. Muffler to have an exhaust leak looked at.  The car was sitting on a hill.  When I came out, there was gas flowing out of the tank onto the parking lot.  I had this tank out recently and it wasn't in amazing shape.  I'd like to modify the Cherokee tank to fit, but there are a lot of them and I don't want to order the wrong one.  Does anyone know which to buy?

What is the application information?   It would be great if SX/4 tanks were available again, even if they hold one less gallon than the OE one.

Its tough for me to tell from the picture of that tank, but I don't think it would work. As I understand it, the SX/4 and Kammback used the same tanks. They fill from the top towards the back (or at the very top of the bank of the tank, I can't exactly remember), and the sending unit and outlet mount to the front of the tank.

The tank on our Spirit was leaking, took it off and had it repaired an they lined it with that stuff, not sure what it is, some kinda acrylic stuff

Anyway, it's like a new one, no leaks and it wasn't too bad price wise

I had the same thing done with my Kammback tank.

Thats a much better written instruction set than the first one I read.  Thanks.  I guess my question is, will my current sender unit mount into that Cherokee tank without any modification?

It seems to me, the best way to go about this is to have the tank restored before it gets worse.  There is a shop about an hour away that does this.  They sandblast the tank inside and out, then bake on a coating.  Looks to cost around $250-300.  That way I can keep my original sender setup.  I have the car in a storage unit, so getting under it to test fit tanks and rig up a different sender unit is difficult.  The business is called Moyer Fuel Tank Renu and is located in Greensburg, PA.  http://www.gas-tank.com/  No affiliation.

I've had the tanks restored using that method in 3 of my cars, it's always worked well.

Haha, yes.  Nice truck.  The person I spoke with on the phone was familiar with the SX/4 tank, so hopefully the estimate I was quoted won't go much higher.

I probably should pull my tank and get it done, just to be on the safe side.   Who knows where the rubber filler fitting to tank is available from.  Or can you use the correct sized fuel resistant hose for this?

The hose or the tank?   Way, way, way back when we had a How To about that filler neck hose and I think someone just got some fuel rated hose, 2" maybe, not sure, and cut it to fit.  I forget how they clamped it.

Wasn't that route66rambler that did that. I think i got user name correct.

It could have been.  I was thinking it was Sam Jones (the first EagleOne),the guy who started the Nest.  It was way back when we did not do a great job archiving stuff and their was a couple accidental great deletes.

The part I need is the rubber seal that Fits in the tank. The metal filler piece then pushes into it.

I had to fabricate the hose from the metal portion behind the license plate holder to the tank.  I went to the local Carquest and test fitted the different fuel filler hoses they had until I found the sizes that fit.  Luckily the bigger size was big enough that the smaller size fit inside of it snugly.  I clamped the larger size to the metal behind the license plate, then put another clamp where the smaller hose fit into the larger one.  It's been working for 5+ years now.

My car had been sitting for over 15 years when I got it, with fuel in the tank.  The old filler hose was a total mess, its hard to even describe the consistency of it.  It was still intact but not solid at all.  Yuck!

Thanks for the info vangremlin.  How about doing a quick write-up for the Eaglepedia?

Thanks for the info vangremlin.  How about doing a quick write-up for the Eaglepedia?

I can do that although I don't recall the sizes of the fuel hoses.  Also, do the other Eagles have a different setup than the Kammbacks?  Macdude's post says he needs the seal on the tank that the "metal filler tube slides into."  I want to make sure I don't tell people the procedure may be applicable to their car when they have a different configuration.  Thanks.

Good points.  Several different ones.  Except for Pacer it could have just been lengths.
