Heater controls

Sry to start another heater thread but I figured this doesn't mesh with the heater core topic.

Anybody know what the heater control knobs can be replaced with? Bottom one broke last month and the top one just broke today. Normally I wouldn't care but the bare metal levers are more live knives against the thumb.

Also, what can I do to get the levers moving easier? I'm guessing a lube job is in order but where and how?

Yj wranglers (1987-1995) use the same knobs, otherwise if other knobs mounts the same way, you should be able to use them as well.

Didn't realize the YJ's had the same knobs.



Other than the print the box looks nearly identical. Any idea if it can be swapped over? Should the Eagle heater control ever go bad.

I don't know, Yjs used an add on for air-conditioning, instead of the heater controls

Until you find some, you can use some vacuum caps that are used to  cap a vacuum line.

I thought of that that too but the levers are VERY sharp. What the heck, it's worth a shot.

I'm letting my Rambler mentality show....but.....I slipped a short piece of quarter-inch nylon air brake tube over the lever to replace a missing knob...and saved my fingers from severe damage. :hello2: :eagle:

White lithium or Silicon grease (bulb dialectic grease) are generally safe for plastic. Take off the radio/heater pod and get both the controls and spray lithium down the control cables. You may have to pull the glove box inside out to access some of the door controls on the heater box if that doesn't smooth things out, but I've found that it's often just the cables.

On the subject of heater/ac controls.  I need the whole mechanism with the cams, levers and all.  It is all plastic and one of the two control cables on the left side and up under the dash to the right of the steering column has a metal arm attached to the firewall frame that operates the damper when the control lever is adjusted.  This is the culprit that rusted and someone apparently wrenched the control lever and completely tore up the plastic and even seriously twisted the lever.  The could well be the problem, BenM above, of the control being stiff.

Anyway, does anyone know of a replacement control unit?

Place a wanted ad in the classifieds and hopefully someone will have one from a car they parted.

Did you find a new control unit? If not I have one on my parts car. PM me for details. :eagle:
