A tach question - 4 cyl tach will work on my 6 cyl eagle?
« on: July 02, 2011, 10:48:20 PM »
Has anyone tried to take a working tach that came off a 4 cyl eagle, and adjusted it to work on a 6 cyl eagle?

It has a piece of tape on the back of the tach, and a hole to adjust it.

Has this ever been tried?  Fail or success?

I've got a NOS gauge from a guy here, and the tach is stamped for a 4 cyl.  I got the 258.  So I want to know if I put a second tach on the car, and turned the pot on the back of that tach, could it be adjusted?

As I understand it, it's possible but I don't know for sure.  It plausible that there's only one tach for all those engines AMC used, and the common tach is just adjusted for either the 4 or 6 cyl engines.

Any comments, or know-how?

I have looked it up in the MR251.
Tachometermeter calibration values for 4 and 6 cyl engines are on page C92.
It is done with a square wave generator.
On page C99, it is saying that it can be tested, but can not be adjusted.
It doesn't show a pot or anything.
