Doors won't open

The driver's side front and rear doors on my '85 eagle won't open from the outside and I need a blow up diagram so I can take them apart and fix them

More than likely you need new door handles as the tang that goes to the rod that opens the door has broken.  You willl have to pull the interior door panel off to get to the screws that hold the handle assembly on.  You may get lucky and find only the rod clip has come off or is broken.  We do have replacement rod clips in the Eagle Nest Store.  But not door handles.  You will have to post a Wanted Topic for those.  And, welcome to the Nest.

So, when you say your doors won't open, do you mean that the latch won't disengage? I had a similar problem with one of the doors on my '87, and I thought it was broken. Turns out I just had to force it open from the inside of the car, then oil it. Sounds stupid, but you might try it before taking everything apart. Hope I was of some assistance.

On an Eagle Sedan, both driver side handles would be the same, right? I might need one for the front door but wasn't sure if it would be interchangeable if I were to find a rear handle.

And they're available in the aftermarket if you search. AMC used them on Jeeps in various ways, but not on the standard CJ/Wrangler front doors. Those are larger.

Wrangler factory half doors, for some model years, used them.  My son's '94 Wrangler had them.

Don't bother going to a dealership though to get the handles.  I went a few weeks ago asking for a half door door handle, and they wanted $150 a piece :o

that was a great shot.  It really looks like Pat is jumping my eagle.  I need to be dressed like a sherriff, with the old hound dog, going "kew, kew, kew."

So if I bought a wrangler half door handle it should be a direct replacement for the eagle handles!? That would be :censored: awesome. I just recently joined the nest after buying a 1984 eagle wagon. I've been trying to find a replacement driver door handle and it's like trying to find a clean hooker... ain't happening.

Yes. If you buy a pair of YJ half door handles you will get one LH and one RH AMC door handle exactly the same as the AMC Eagle handles. Those are also advertised to be built stronger than the original AMC part. The black ones are the cheapest, but chrome ones are available now. Front and back door handles on the same side of a four door are exactly the same.

Expect to pay about $35 for a pair of black ones on the evil bay.

A member here on the Nest is also making stainless steel repair parts. It is just the paddle, so you need to remove the pin from an old Eagle handle and retain the old rear housing and spring. Besides having to rebuild the handle yourself, the stainless steel paddles cost about twice as much. I bought two pairs of his stainless steel paddles for my nicest Eagle and am happy with their quality. Obviously most of my Eagles will be getting the cheaper YJ handles however.

I did the YJ halfdoor handles about 10 years ago on SOTE (Pass side only). I reused the original frame and just put the new paddle into the old frame because the screw holes to hold the new frame to the door weren't drilled or threaded.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
