Title: Need help finding front axle seals
Post by: 82 amc eagle xchp on August 31, 2016, 07:31:30 PM
Ok, I have a 1982 eagle wagon  I took the front left (short shaft) axle out to get some repairs done. The shop told me  the seals they ordered don't fit. And he  has no luck finding any.  they say  shaft  size is 1.388 in and casing is 2.407 in. national seal co. 483793 is 1.343 by 2.448. I don't think this shop wants to spend the time finding it for me the last time I replaced this seal was 1986 its that little shaft on the left that bolts on  to the c.v. joint. thanks

According to Rock Auto they do have them.
They usually give a quantity they have on hand but I didn't see one this time.

Cross referencing the OEM part numbers shows 483793 for cars with non disconnect axles built before 83 and 474127 for 83+.  The National 474127 crosses to the OEM part number 8134587, but the dimensions don't match your measurements either. 2.250 outside and 1.399 shaft size. I wonder if your Eagle has some kind of heavier duty front axle since it was a CHP vehicle.  Is you r axle a non disconnect or disconnect?

I found this chart and can't find a seal that meets the shops measured  specs. Page 34 on this chart http://www.timken.com/en-us/products/documents/seal-specification-guide.pdf.

4795V is closest with a 1.391 shaft size and 2.482 bore size.

Thank you for helping me. I got the axle back yesterday. and the idiots put the wrong cover on it . all that time wasted with those guys. all they did was weld a bead where the keeper grove is to make it smaller. still some play but better than it was. then he says I should get a used axle. for parts. some shops just dont want to work. so monday I need to go up 1 hr each way to get my cover. I hope this dana 30 cover works with no clearance problems. its getting  hard in this part of california to find some one who knows what there doing.

The seals Rockauto offer are not the right ones. I'm taking my seals to Bearing Headquarters and match them .
