This is finnish Eagle # 7.... now it is mine... :hello2:

Looks like you are starting the first European Eagle Sanctuary!
-
not a bad looking eagle congrats dude.
-
Thats a great looking car!
-
Nice! Congratulations!
-
Another wiew... not so happy.

-
From the looks of it it's running! That's always a plus! :rotfl:
-
First job done...
Looks much better...
What was hidden behind the front fender flare...
-
I like that grill!
-
I like it too...
it is an 81 concord grill.
-
i have the same grill on Eagle Eyes.
-
Front fender is made in Taiwan... :rotfl:
This needs some restoration...
And this too...
-
We all know you can handle the restoration!! That bird is in good hands.
-
From what I've seen of your work this should be a walk in the park. Good for you and good luck.
-
Today
It looked like this when I started. Not bad...
I opened the sill. Someone had shortened right side about an inch...
Pulling back it to the right place....
One inch too close.
After few minutes it is on right place.
It has now new brakes and some paint... Needs some welding, paint and body sealer.
-
Your really moving right along on your new eagle!! I have no doubt its going to be a beauty when your finished with it! Have and egg for a great save!!
-
Here is what I did today...
It is that lost inch.
Finished!
Inner plastic fender had new place after that old crash. It was one inch closer inner fender. I closed those extra holes with body seal. I ordered hinge pins and bushings... If I´ll get them to morrow, there shall be a new door. And then I´ll start to work with fender...
-
Wow :eyepopping: its like the damage was never there....you do some awesome metal work juhap!
-
Testing that "new door"... There is a huge gap between door and fender. :censored:
I wouldn´t call this as a perfect fit... :P
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/005-2.jpg)
-
I had similar fitment issues between doors and fenders on my SX/4. We adjusted for many hours and got it a little better but gaps are still pretty uneven. After having it together for a while it doesn't seem very noticeable though.
-
Today I started to do things right... Door went to its right position. Needed some three hours! But now it is there.
Then... back to fender. Second time and there are still a gap... and other problems. You can see some drawings and some numbers...
Third test. After some hammering and modification, it looks much better... Writing means "hit me with your hammer"...
After few intensive hours I had done some patchwork and it was time to do fourth test. Now it looks almost done...
-
Great work my man! Skill does wonders.
-
"VASARAA!" -I'm gonna use this ;D. Just don't leave it on there, you might get some punks who take it literally.
-
your new bird is coming along nicely.
-
That´s it...
-
Nice work Juhap. What an improvement!
There was a question a while ago about the color of Eagle's rear valence panels. They showed a picture of a brochure that had an Eagle with its valence panel painted the sedondary color of the car. No one could find an Eagle that had that. But yours does! So whoever asked that question if they really did this on the Eagles just got their question answered. Cool!
-
Started with windshield. There was a lot of windshield adhesive all around... It needed some knives and other equipments.
I found some rust... what a surprise. :rotfl:
There is rust all around the frame. And a half inch layer of bondo on the roof... :o
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/lasipois002.jpg)
-
There is rust all around the frame. And a half inch layer of bondo on the roof... :o
Nothing you can't handle!
-
This was a very sad wiew... Dashboard was glued with somekind of house construction stuff. I had to use hammer and chisel to remove it.
-
Man thats sure a bummer. Who in their right mind would pull such a stunt?
-
It has been done by a swedish guy... this car was at the time of its first crash in Sweden...
-
Now it looks like that...
-
There is no rust anymore, just shiny black paint. And a "new" windshield from my Hornet...
And here it is, a "new" dash...
It is much better than original one.
-
Much,much better.
-
I have never seen that color combination on the seat covers. Must be very rare and looks factory.
-
Testing... New dashboard is about 4 mm too much on right... There is not enough space between it and right door...
I think that this darker color is not bad at all... Needs no painting.
Here is a wrong color, but who cares...
OT: today it is Finland´s Independence Day :hello2:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence_Day_(Finland)
-
You do great work friend. Happy Independence Day!!!
-
Hope you had a safe and wonderful Independance Day my friend.
-
I have done some modification to get fresh/warm air to driver and passenger...
My Eagle hadn´t air conditioning at all, so there is just a empty hole in the middle of dash...
I had extra aiconditioning parts taken from my Concord, so I could fill that area with air outlets
Air ducts with holes...
-
What kind of speedo do do your eagles have? Do they have km and miles?
-
Now there is a brand new dashboard... :rotfl:
-
maybe some vynil paint would do the trick to match the original color for that new dashboard. hello from mexico eagle fella.
-

Juhap, as good as you are at painting, that should be no problem.
-
Does time move slower over there Juhap?? ;D Because you sure seem to get a heck of a lot of work done quickly : )
Looks great !!
-
My main task is to get this job done by the end of May. Then it is the best time for this car to have road test done. Why is it so? In Finland your car must have its annual road test before the original day of registration (i.e. when the car was new). My Eagle is private import, so it hasn´t this official day of registration... If it is so, then last number of the license plate gives the last day of road test. 7 means end of August. I have three months to do the test. June, July and August... If I want to drive next summer, Test is end of May.... If I do road test before, I have to do it again by the end of May... One day earlier, you have to do the test again by the 31st of May.... :banghead:
Today I fixed left front brake. Not so easy as it should have been... Cylinder had some rust... It took 1,5 hours to get it done. Think I´m gonna buy new calibers...
Started to strip driver side fender flare. What was hidden there... Guess what? Rust of course. :help:
-
Thanks for the explination.Your work is allways great to follow.

Those 1981 front brakes are real nasty. I have a 1981 Concord with similar brakes and they have been nothing but trouble since day one, I lost count of the number of calipers and burnt pads replaced over the 11 years of ownership. I always wanted to swap them out for 82-83 Concord/Spirit brakes but now it is a parts car. They are so much trouble that I won't be using all of the newish parts for a disc upgrade on my 68 Javelin, the original drums have proven to be super reliable after sitting for 8 years compared to the 81 disc brakes that need to be taken apart every 6 months and put back together with fresh anti-seize to prevent caliper failure/burnt pads.
That rust does not look so bad. With your skills it will be fixed in no time.
-
I removed some bondo, and that´s what i found..
-
ouch that is some nasty damage to find. but with your skills that shouldn't be to hard to fix.
-
Wow...roll over?
-
WTF?
-
Yes, I think that the first crash was somekind of collision with an other car and then roll over. There are some fender benders all over the body. After that they painted car white. When the second hit happened they used matt white house paint... Unfortunately... last paint brushed was grey rust primer...
Started hammering. I opened section over windshield, so I could do some hammering. Corner is so hard to reach that I´m going to cut the whole part away. And hammer it separately...
-
Great work so far juhap! roof damage is always a buzz kill, nothing fun about it.
-
If you were in the states it would be much easier to get a donor splice from the sanctuary and weld it in. Considering the part, it might only cost you shipping, I mean really, how much demand is there for roof splices. Just a little time to cut it out, wrap it up and ship it. Your time has to be worth something. Given your talent I would say quite a bit! But then you wouldn't have so much fun.
-
I suspect that part of the roof will be work hardened from previous hammering. Do you think it would be a good idea to heat it to red with a torch to eliminate the work hardening before you go at it again?
-
There was no other way...
I have to restore this :censored: piece of sheet metal...
-
It looks now much better... But I have to fabricate new drip rail...
-
Why do you suppose there were those three holes in that part of the roof?
-
They are for luggage rack...
-
LOL, I should have thought of that, but it didn't occur to me.
-
Replacing drip rail...
New drip rail...
-
Very good Sir. You are amazing and I am truly impressed by your hard work and dedication. Wish you were local.
:occasion14:
-
Thank you of those kind words...
Parts are coming together. Looks like patch work... so far...

Can I ask what type of welder you are using? I have been wanting to buy a little one for small projects for some time now. I've never used a MIG with a wire feed but I used to be pretty good with an ARC welder back in the day (20 yrs ago).
I would need just a small welder that can run off 120V.
-
Very impressive :occasion14: , both work and time frame :o .
-
Can I ask what type of welder you are using?
I´m using a 150 A MIG-welder. It is almost 20 years old, a basic model. It is a little bit too small, but I´ve learned how to use it... Torch is the trouble. They´ve made it too simple and weak. I have changed it twice, and now it is about to fall apart...
I´m dreaming of a TIG welder and a plasma cutter, but they are so expensive...
-
Looks great!
-
At last I had time to finish welding job. After that I put some lead.
-
That looks really good!
-
Very good! Using lead is a dying art for auto repair. Everyone uses bondo for major fill areas nowadays. Bondo is only for covering very small surface dings and smoothing large areas IMHO.
-
that old girl is really coming along juhap nice work.
-
Truly amazing!!
-
Welded all luggage rack holes and then sealed them with lead...
Removed CB-antenna and radioantennas...
"Look mama: No holes!"
-
Butane torch and stick of lead, love the looks of that! I've also seen guys use what looks like a large soldering iron that is used in soldering the old copper downspouts and flashing on houses.
-
very impressive juha i would like to have at least the half of your skills with soldering. good job :hello2:
-
Today I did some welding too, it is holiday season...
-
Today I had time to do something... I removed left front fender and found this small hole. It looks like this when finished with lead.
Another hole was quite a sad wiew... Someone had made this when installed new radio antenna. A direct opening to foot well!
There are so much burning stuff under the dashboard, so I soldered the "coin" I made. It is waterfproof too...
-
The first cut...
-
Have not done anything for a while. Just lifted it a little higher...
Because of this... :banghead:
-
You haven't posted in awhile...you slackin' :)
Looks like you have quite the chore ahead of you underneath there!
-
don`t feel dissapointed because of that there is nothing a bit of metal and good welding can do. with your skills would be piece of cake
-
If everyone had metal working skills like that, just think how many eagles and other classics would not have gone to the crusher.
-
I´ve been busy... and haven´t had enough time to work with my cars... Sad isn´t it. And now when I have time, it is freezing. 30 degrees below zero (-22 F)... :help:
I have removed some isolation mat. And that is what I found... :banghead:
-
Oh no, a rust infestation! Quick call the Juhap pest control!
-
Yesterday it was coldest day of this winter. Here in Finland we have the Winter Oldtimer Rally. And it was yesterday... -32 degrees below zero... COLD... It kept me away from my garage, but didn´t keep those gear heads out of the roads.
Pics... http://raggar.kuvat.fi/kuvat/2012/Talwiajot+4.2.2012/
-
Wow great pictures, especially considering how cold it was. I think all of my pics would have been blurry because of me shivering! I think my favorite is the old jeep wagoneer, although all the cars look great.
-
i saw a lot of old Chevy's and Ford's in there as well as a bunch of Opal's and Fiat's. you guys have some very nice cars over there.
-
I cut some sheet metal...
Did some metal shaping...
There is now something to begin with...
-
This weekend I was very active... Did some lumber jack job and this...
Not a pretty thing...
Cut some more...
further back...

You do nice work!
-
Sweet! These pictures will come in handy when I have to do my inner rocker panels. Now I just need to learn how to weld ;)
-
More cutting...
-
Rust killer paint...
The first part is welded.
And the next one is waiting.
-
WOW juhap! It's amazing how closely this whole page resembles EXACTLY what I want to do and what needs to be done on my SX/4. I was planning on putting some good rust killer paint on the frame in the same area, and you cut your floors and rockers in almost all the same places as mine were cut a while ago. Very nice job!!!
May I ask what gauge sheet metal you used and what tools you used to shape it? This is a very large and important part of my project that still must be done.
-
"May I ask what gauge sheet metal you used and what tools you used to shape it?"
Yes you may...
I´m using 1 mm (19 gauge) galvanized sheet metal. Just because I want to be sure that I don´t have to do this never again.
My tools are very simple. Just angle grinder, shears, sheet metal folder, planishing hammer, and so on... And then there is a sheet metal roller that I can use.
I wish that some day I had an english wheel or a planishing hammer and all those professional tools. They are too expensive for me to buy, but some sunny day... Win lottery...
-
I bought a few sheets of 16 gauge to do mine with. It's pretty thick, but I've seen a lot of people online go with 16 and it should be plenty strong. Hopefully it's not too difficult to weld.
Another project of mine might be to build a sufficient sheet metal brake to bend it all with. Doesn't need to be perfect, so I'd rather not spend like $300 for a small one new. Everything will get thorough rust protection on mine when it's finished as well, because that's the last thing I want to worry about.
Thanks for the info!
-
It is almost done...
-
Looks great man! I have a project for you. Come to MO! :)
-
Come to MO! :)
Thanks, but no thanks. I´d prefer finnish Route 66. I´m living 50 meters (55 yards) from it. "Get your gigs on route 66"...
Finnish 66 goes from Orivesi to Lapua, and I live in small town called Ruovesi. Although I was born in town called Kotka, Eagle in finnish...
You can send me a couple of SX/4´s and Sundancers instead. :rotfl:
-
The US Route 66 is quite nice and if you take it beginning to end you'll go through just about every variance of land in the US.
If I had an SX/4 or Sundancer it surely wouldn't be shipped to Finland! :)
My '80 Wagon is gonna need a lot of work...and the stuff you are doing I don't have the time/patience for...so it will most likely be sold as soon as possible.
-
Today I did some welding job... and then I began to remove rest of that rusty sheet metal. It was a very hard job to do. It took several hours and I had to use all my imagination to get rid of it all... I hope that I had a plasma cutter.
-
I tested new sheet metal. Fits nicely...
And lower wiew...
-
Looks great Juhap !! I wish I had kept my 4' box and pan brake when I got out of the buisness of sheetmetal, but I didn't. :( .
Those sheetmetal screws work great for you it looks like. I have some of those ones we call "steelies" for putting hanger strap on I beams , they screw through up to 1/4" plate.
It really looks awesome, what a great effort and results to saveing this one.
-
Spent some hours in my garage and this is the result... welded and painted.

Juhap, you are quickly becoming my hero. Great work friend. I wish I had your skills with bodywork. That's all I would do with my free time.
-
I think you need a few more vise grip pliers! :)
-
It´s almost there...
-
It´s done...
This was the last part made...
And that inner fender fits!
-
Great work. Looks just like new!!
-
And that inner fender fits!
Way to go. That's a particularly hard area to form and get the inner fender to fit, I spent a long time on that area.
-
dang you do some very good work dude.
-
Don´t look any good... Rust I believe... Let´s see...
I just knew it!
New sheet metal inside...
And then.... finished...
-
Guess what I did find from the other side...
RUST...
-
Oh boy... 3 weeks gone... What have I done?
This! ;D
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/oilpan/009-1.jpg)
What an earth?
It is going to be a pattern of a finned aluminum AMC V8 oil pan...
-
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET !! awesome man - way cool - old school all the way.
Ok , so is that plaster of paris ? or what ??
-
"...is that plaster of paris..."
It is a damaged sheet metal oil pan covered with bondo.
-
Thanks : )
-
Today I worked with rear doors. Driver side window didn´t came up and passenger side door had no door handle... Now they work and there are some rust protection stuff inside.
Got that oil pan pattern almost done... So I changed exhaust pipe of my wife´s Peugeot and worked with Eagle. ;D
-
Have done some door jobs. Right front door is working very well now. Left door is under construction... Window didn´t came uo easily. When I fixed that, I noticed that window hits metal frame. >:D There are some pieces of U-shaped seal missing...
By the way... V8 oli pan was casted, looks like this...
-
Very sweet!
-
OK...What´s new?
Driver side front door is OK now. Window goes up and down. "New" U-shaped seal did some miracles. Upper hinge got new 10 mm bolts, door do not hang any more. And some other small things done. Started my new sauna project and have collected tons of fire wood for next winters... and...
-
Now there are new brake calipers, hoses and lines. Needs bleeding. Some weldings done today. And there are new Strut Rod Bushings...
I had to replace driver side outer CV boot. Years ago I found a Speed Boot- brand CV boot. What do you think about these "bolt together" boots? Does it keep grease in and dust out of the CV? Or are these just waste of time and money?
I think it is time to bolt front fenders on and start to do some paint job. The idler arm needs some TLC... And there is something to do inside of the car and...
-
Any problems with the strut rod bushings? Where did you find them and are they rubber or poly.
-
As far as I remember these one came from American Parts Depot some years ago... and they are hard and shiny = poly?
-
It is time to do some bondo job...
This corner is almost done. It was quite easy job, but then there is that flat area next to it... >:D
This corner had before almost one inch of bondo!! Now 10 % of it...

Something done. Sometimes someone had painted this Eagle with some industrial paint or something like that. It is pain to sand old paint. There are bigger and smaller dents because someone has turned this Eagle upside down...
-
Today I painted a layer of wash primer and a layer of sprayed body filler...
It looks much better now.
-
Looking good juhap! :occasion14:
-
Roof needs careful sanding and a lot of maxifiller primer. I´m going to do that after I´ve fixed fenders (front and rear), hood and doors. Hmm.... that means rest of the car... :rotfl:
-
I bought a new set of wheels. This is a second set of centerlines. First set had too wide rear wheels. These were Centerlines. New set is Keystone Vortex...
There is no progress at all... Been busy... Holidays with kids in capital city of Finland, Helsinki and Denmark, Legoland... Have done some construction jobs.
A new place for an old sauna...
Here is a place for a chimney...
-
You are one busy man but nice work and I like your wheels.
-
Yesterday I began to work with front valance panel. I noticed how bad it looked. So I did collect all panels together... and it was the best of them all.
I cleaned all under body protection and rust out of it. And started hammering. It took a lot of time...
After that it was quite allright, but it needed something to make it perfect. So I went to my school shop (it is summer holiday!) and did some rolling...
To be continued....
BTW: is this border between two colors like this from factory? I have two to-tone cars and the line is the same...

I finished that valance panel, no paint though... And started to work with front fender. Driver´s side had some rust and minor damages that needed hammering. After sandblasting and grinding and hammering and acid primer inside of it, it looked like this. Not bad... but there are paint chips on the top of the fender. I had to sand that white paint... There were two layers of white and one brown layer. Brown (of course) and first white were car paint, but the second white was some kind of house or furniture paint, enamel or such... >:D
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/050.jpg)
After sanding all the white layers and some primer it looked like this... I used paint thinner to clean the dust. What happened? That pinkish bondo became like jelly! So I sanded that too...
-
Was just wondering what you do in your spare time? Just kidding! Nice work!
-
New bondo added. And I have removed most of that white stuff... It is pain to sand. Paint under it is OK, so I want to save it... :P
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/005-11.jpg)
Right side fender had these spots, no paint there...
So why? When right fender was replaced, the painter didn´t remove that black primer before he painted it... >:D
I removed all paint to prevent new spots in the future.

NASCAR called, your missing a right front lug nut, you have to do a drive through penalty. ;D
-
NASCAR called, your missing a right front lug nut, you have to do a drive through penalty. ;D
When I took my Eagle for its first drive it was wandering a bit on the highway. Got it to my husband's work and he noticed I only had two lug nuts on each wheel and those were put on only hand tight. The passenger rear wheel was actually wobbling on the drum but fortunately hadn't damaged the rim yet. I did that while I was working on it in the garage thinking that'll be fine for rolling the car back and forth in the garage, never crossed my mind about it when I went to take it for a real drive.
-
Based on the pictures on the "other" projects, I think Juhap should host an International Meet so we can all try out his sauna! ;D
-
Today I tried to get right fender to go together with door. No luck. This taiwan made fender is close, but... something is wrong. I have done cutting and welding before and now it needed new lower corner. I made a new piece and started to weld... Gas regulator of my MIG-weld went broken! Spent most of the day for nothing >:D
I had to buy new regulator. Couldn´t find it here locally, so I had to drive an hour to get it... There is an IKEA next to parts shops, so... It was late in the evening when I got back home, and I spent much more money than regulator did cost (39,90€)... :censored:
-
I know the feeling. Worked most of the day in the garage and got very little to show for it. I know everybody has days like these but it sure is fustrating.Guess tomorrow is another day.
-
Now those fenders look much better.... I sprayed a layer of body filler to them.
-
Looks great as usual Juhap!
-
They may look great, but they are good enough to paint with matt or semi matt car paint...
Right side, that taiwan made, had been damaged in that second crash... a bad fender and a crash, not a good combination = a lot of bondo... :censored:
Lower corner, testing new sheet metal
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/003-16.jpg)
Front corner looked like this after I fabricated it... but this is Concord!!!
After cutting and rewelding it is now like this.
I had to remove this support bracket and relocate it... It didn´t fit at all. It had never been in right position!!
-
Started to work with rear corners...
This was the worst. So I´ll begin with it...
What was under that white paint... There were brown paint and some bondo... a lot of it!
Under brown original color there was a huge dent and several kilos of plastic body filler... >:D
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/011-4.jpg)
That dent is very deep and large...
-
After little hammering... It didn´t take much time or work...
This is that same spot as before... Where is that massive wrinkle?
-
EGGselent job (as usual). Amazing what you do. I'd be happy if I had 1/10 that skill.
-
Done bondo job and sanding. I welded one antenna hole...
... and added some lead.
Yesterday I glued bumper end together...
-
Removed some bondo...
-
You go guy. Watching your progress is what keeps me doing on mine.
-
That much...
This was under chome trim...
And I thought this was the better side... f :censored: bull :censored: ...
-
Almost every possible method (I have) is used... of course hammering and...
Pulling dent out using lead bar, pliers and slidehammer... Or long iron bar.
One big dent was too much out, so I used "hot spots" to shrink sheet metal. I dont´t have acetylene torch, so I used shrinking disc method to warm metal... My disc is just an old flap disc. I used its back side...
Cutting bad areas and hammering and welding...
It is almost there... :eagle:
-
As you can remember rear corner of side window had some rust hidden.
This was under all window sealer...
What is hidden under this rusty piece of sheet metal?
Let´s open it...
Rust of course!
Hmm... Needs more to cut... What might be there...
There is.... RUST... that you can´t cut, because there is nothing behind it, but you can clean it...
Now it looks much better!
Testing a new piece of sheet metal. Fits nicely, but there is something missing! It is not ready to weld...
It needs this. An one inch nail.... or just a head of it.
There must be a pin for plastic spacer just there to keep glass out of metal...
Now it is time to weld all together. But NO! Behind there is painted interior... What Angus MacGyver would do? What can I do to save that paint... YES! Glue it!
So I´ll weld it tomorrow...
-
Very nice juhap, very interesting about your method of shrinking, never tried that before, nor have I heard of it, looks like it works well for you :occasion14: .
-
LOL @ "McGyver" your just too funny Juhap. All that skill and a comedian too.
-
O-boy, o-boy... Here it is at last... Weldings and leads done. Not perfect, but good enough... ;)
And the first bondo...
-
Not only are you good, but you appear to have either a lot of time...or work fast. Either way. Great job man.
-
It is summer holiday... and the living is easy...

It was late in the evening when I sprayed some body filler... this nightmare is ove, it is time to (http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/beer.gif)

I get excited everytime I see an update to this thread.
Same here! I am very impressed with the wok that is being done.
-
Makes me want to get out and start straightening my bird out! That looks amazing, maybe I'll just ship mine out to you, haha.
-
You can ship here as many as you like... SX/4´s, Kammbacks and Sundancers wanted... I´ve no money, but you can send anyways... :hello2:
-
I started to fix doors. Left door needs TLC, there were rust and deep dent under the door moulding. Those swedish plastic things had somebody glued with some mysterious stuff, so I had to use an angle grinder to get rid of it!
This was under all rust and paint... Needed a lot of work to get it rust free.
-
We need to bring (kidnap) you here for a (working) vacation so you can help with body work on our Eagles!
-
Hmm... Work camp sounds nice. Summer holiday is almost over and school year is waiting... But Scandinavian car guys who came to US, stays there forever... I think my wife has a different opinion of that matter.
What do you think if I´d put a 304 under the hood? Can AX15 handle that? Does original 119 TC work?
I have a chance to buy a 304, so...
They are rare here in Finland, 360 is more common (I have 4 of them). But it is too big, according to finnish law, for Eagle. Motor can be 20% larger than original used in that body. Eagle and Hornet (and Concord) uses same body shell as you all know. But here in Finland they are totally different cars! So Hornet 360 can´t be used when you calculate new engine cubics... (Volvo 244 and 264 are also totally different cars, even if 244 has a six cylinder engine like 264 has...) (But all Chevy Bel Airs are the same or ford F-150´s. From 50´s to present!)
-
... But Scandinavian car guys who came to US, stays there forever...
I don't think anyone here has a problem with that!
-
With all the attention deprived eagles in the states you could do rust repairs until you die!
That is done really weird laws with the engines sizes...had never heard of that before.
-
Do motor inspectors know the difference between a 304 and a 360? :police: This thread is great! It is the first one I look for when I check out the Nest. I wish I had the talent and ambition you have.

a quick look and they should - I beleive it is cast pretty visable on the block, though I get your point - 304-401cu.in. are all externally the same.
-
Rear doors are almost done...
Concord door needs just a little bondo...
Left front door needs more TLC... unfortunately this is the best I have... I found fiberglass body filler and some rust...
When one changes motor, you must self show to inspector what new motor is. Needs paper work or such. AMC is easy because of those casted numbers.... If car uses unleaded fuel and is considered as low-CO2-car, you need a document that shows that new motor is as clean (or cleaner) as the original was. That is because of European Union directives... That document comes from importer or factory... How about AMC... dead brand. You can´t use AMC´s in newer cars... And in some cases you need a more documents from manufacturer that THEY accept that new motor. In many EU countries they have never heard about that, but here in Finland everything that comes from Brussels (EU capitol) is like words of God... And then here are some "home made" rules... If you buy a new non-EU vehicle that is not made for european markets ( Mustang for example) you have to buy new lights and glassware which have been approved by finnish road test organisation!! That is only in Finland... not in any other EU-country... But if you have lived in another country and you move back to Finland and car comes with you, it can be like it was... Just get finnish license plates... That is Finland...

Door are ready... almost

This job didn´t take all the time since last update...
We spent monday in the south of Finland and my wife bought a newer car (and I did buy an AMC 304 engine). And tuesday I was as a babysitter to my doughter...
-
I haven´t been in my garage for a while... Yesterday I started to fix right rear side window... RUST...
Here are pics of this taiwan made front fender, and how "well" it fits...
Take good look at the lower corner and the gap where lamp bezel will be. I had to cut and weld the corner near windscreen, it didn´t fit at all. It is still a little different from the other.
Here is the original version... all fits nicely
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Eagle2/011-7.jpg)
-
I had this done yesterday...
And today I cut a piece of sheet metal and did that 1" nail thing...
...and glued it.
Today was the end of summer holiday... :banghead:

Got this welded... and added some lead.

Sanding the hood... That white stuff (I don´t believe it is paint...) is hard as a rock... Takes a lot of time and sanding discs. :banghead:

Have done a big job to get those wrecked fender flares back to shape...
And yesterday I bought a new toy...
Matador Coupe Oleg Cassini
(http://i1125.photobucket.com/albums/l590/jpihkanen/Oleg/001.jpg)
kind a sad story...
-
:o Another project? Nice, will we see a build of that one too?
-
Yes, another one... And yes you´ll see the project if you want...
But at first I´m gonna drive it as it is... Maybe little better paint. Hide those bad weldings... NASCAR clone...
Fixed leaking exhaust gaskets and pipes... Alternator needs TLC... I don´t like those Dodge wheels...
-
Ooh, that has a special interior, right? I think I saw some kind of ad for it before. You should post some pics of the inside if you get the chance.
-
Been busy with my new toy...
But now Eagle is about to have some paint...

It is kind a surprise to me too... ;)
I´m trying to mix same color than my friends boat has... I´m not sure if I remembered everything right... :help:
Tuesday, I think, is the day...

Surprise... Surprise...

:occasion14: Interesting color, I like it. 8)
-
I like the grey! Can't wait to see more pics. How did the body work look with the fresh paint? See any areas you wished you'd have spent more time on?
-
Roof was and still is a mess... I hoped that the paint were more semigloss close to matt... But let´s see...
-
Looking sharp.
-
Yeah, that roof was a mess and you did a lot to get it looking as good as it does. Maybe putting the roof rack back on will hide it a bit! :)
-
Looks cool! What color will you use for the trim?
-
Fender flares are matt black now. They are quite mess too. Tried to fix those, but they are far from perfect. :P
But grey, matt black and polished aluminium/ stainless steel goes well together, I think... and some chrome stripes...
-
Like the color and with the trim black should look really good. Can't wait to see more photos along with your progress. Nice work my friend!
-
Parts are coming together...

Last week I took this project out of my garage. I´m going to paint my Matador Coupe some day and after that some other jobs too. I´ll start with this when it is spring time. Brakes, interior and wiring needs some attention... then road test... I have made an order of a new set of 205/70x15 wheels.

Congratulations, on your rebuild. All your hard work is finally coming together, and looking great.
-
I found a copy of a copy of a pic of Eagle between dutch plates...
This was a false alarm... :o
thank you mudkicker715
-
that would have been jurjen's eagle of the month picture from a few years back
-
Something new...
I bought a "new" set of wheels. They are from a Mercury Cougar of a Jeeper from our AMC club.
Inner lining was terrible. So it needed some attention.
Someone had glued a leather like vinyl to it after he had fixed that hardened material. After that second crash it has been fixed with duct tape. That dark stuff is just dust.
I took that vinyl off. It looks much better in pic that it really is...
Used some packaking tape to give right shape and fix holes. Notice those sophisticated supports...
Some woven fiberglass...
...and resin.
-
Looks good Juhap! That will be a great improvement for the inside.
-
Great idea using the fiberglass mat, that will really give it some strength !
-
This one needs some extra strenght, because it had broken into pieces.
If there were more AMC Eagle/Hornet/Concord wagons in Finland, it would be time to make a fiberglass mould for new inner linings... But it is waste of money... We have here about 15 wagons... and this was one of the worst...

It looks incredible.
I was considering to discard the original headlining fiberglass panel due to its toxicity and because it is slightly broken.
Could you help me, or give me instructions to do the same with my Eagle?
I re-attached a new headlining cloth but if not fixed correctly and now I am planning to repair the panel prior to glue again the cloth.
Could you send me information about the fiberglass rebuild?
Thanks

Oh, this needs some updating...
Recent pics...
Transmission had heavy oil leak, so I bought an aluminium pan. It is made here on local foundry.
Bought a "new" manual gearbox... What might be the new motor?
Inner lining as new.. It is sagging now because of weak glue and resin fumes. >:D :censored:

-
hi, that looks like a T4 or T5, are you doing a manual conversion? best luck, gz
-
That´s T-5. And if everything goes as I want, there is a :amc: V8 under hood some day... ::)
-
hi, so, a V8 conversion eh? that is VERY ambitious! it has been done, but successfully only 2 or 3 times. Putting a V8 into an Eagle is VERY difficult, not like any other car. A better way to go, would be to put in a late model 4.0 stroker. This engine will actually fit into an Eagle, and a good 4.7 stroker will have more power than the average AMC V8 anyway.
Either way you go, good luck, and keep us posted. gz
-
Oh yesh!
And here we go!
One Eagle stock power unit....
Welded on a cart...
And now we have a nice template...
And the first test.
to be continued...
-
Well, you sure have me curious as to what is going to happen next lol. When I read the part about the Eagle power plant welded to the cart.....i thought you were going to make a 4 wheel drive cart!
-
First test...
nothing is impossible or too difficult...
Motor is pointing now 5 cm higher than six and it is 4 cm to the right... six is 1,5 cm.
Javelin oil pan brought engine little bit lower than Jeep oil pan...
to be continued...
-
Some job done...
-
Both sides done...
Right side needed some crossmember modification, because of oil filter... Driver side uses stock crossmember.
-
Looking good.
-
Added some paint...
-
Always love to see your fab work. Looks great, keep it up! :eagle:
-
V8 and transmission are almost ready to be placed to the engine bay...
Carb needs to be cleaned and kick down is missing... I have got it... somewhere...
New coil and resistor... and sand blasted pulleys, they were very rusty.
Never seen so bad ones... rust mud and alot of paint... (yes, this was a CJ Jeep motor)
New AMC Spirit water hoses... and something else new... can´t remember all. ;)
-
Can't wait to see a video of it running.
-
I´d like to see it running too... Been sick and ill for over a year now has done some delays to all of my projects... :banghead:
-
Thanks to Photobucket this thread is destroyed... I´m sorry folks... :censored:
-
What happens when you log into Photobucket? Are they saying you need to get a subscription or something?
-
They want me to pay 39.99 dollars per month, if I want my pics on my threads... and I have two accounts... it would be 800 $ in a year.
This is their new policy to all their customers...
They are comitting "business suicide", as it was called in a web newspaper...
-
V8 parts coming together with actual motor...
Drivers side had no problem.
Exhaust needs a little of bending to fit.
The other side had some issue with oil filter... I had no idea that it would be so tight fit.
Some adjustment had to be done...
-
a lot of the amc v8 people go to a remote oil filter kit even in the cars that came with v8's
-
I tried that kit too, but smaller filter and modfied crossmember was easier and cheaper to do...
And oil tubes were too close to the crossmember.
-
Some progress...
After many delays, I started engine swap.
And engine has left the Eagle...
The powerline... mighty 258...
And what the heck is this? One bad rust repair attempt, I guess. So some grinding and welding before new motor goes in.
-
Oh, no...
-
Wow, not much left! But your work is amazing, so you've probably got it fixed already.
-
Not yet... and not for a while. Found a silicone rust repair... :help:

Grinding and cutting. Cutting and grinding... testin new sheet metal...

Here we go again...

-
...and again...
-
After grinding, heavy cleaning and some finishing job, it is time for fresh paint.
-
Looking good! I'm always amazed at the magnitude of the repairs you accomplish!
-

X2 on both accounts. I wish I had the skills to weld like you do.
-
Now it is time to replace that silicone repair...
First I had to cut rusted areas. This did take several hours! What a job!
Restored battery tray. It had some modifications made. Cut them away and soldered nut back to its original place.
-
I hope that this was the last one...
-
No it was not! Oh my...
Under the thick layer of some kind of protective wax there was a nasty surprise...
Here we go again.... :banghead:
At least the previous rust is now finished...
-
Started to do that little rust issue... and what happened.... You can guess... right.... more rust...
-
Keep at it you'll get er done. And by the amazing work you do it will be better then new in no time.
-
After a busy afternoon....
Welded...
-
You're sure getting a lot of experience in rust repair!!
-
Yes indeed...
I hope that this car won´t give me any unexpected experience anymore.... :rotfl:
Here is fresh paint instead of rust... though colour is the same...
I hope that tomorrow I can slip that 304 into it....
-
I am always impressed with the restoration you have done on these cars, thanks for sharing with us. Keep up the good work!
-
Brougth all Eagle parts to garage... Choosing all the good things... Something new, something old, something blue... and from -80 Sport...
The first test...
Tight fit, but it did not hit anywhere... Sits like glove...
-
Today it was a final countdown...
Putting all parts together. Package is ready to install...
Going in...
Before it looks like this, I had to remove righthand exhaust manifold and transmission oil tube (Jeep CJ version).
Cylinderhead hits firewall on drivers side near brake cylinder....
New engine mounts are too solid and transmission mount is too soft... So engine points to heaven... :censored:
-
That. Is. Glorious.
-
I have been working with exhaust pipes for some time now. Dual pipes gives me some trouble... But little by little...
Here it takes some time to get all fit... this is the third version of it.
I have sandblasted and painted the fan and the visco coupling. Jeep air cleaner needs some job, because it hits the windscreen wiper motor...
-
Ready to rock...
Shorties...

Looks nice! Let's hear it run!
-
First start! :hello2:
Major gas leak, so after first smoke I could not run it longer...
-
V8 Eagle :hello2:
My 304 needs som attention... oil smoke, no idle... :censored:
But at least I got V8 under the hood and got it running, sort of... ;)
-
Pull and rebuild I guess. Congrats you got it in. That's an accomplishment in and of itself!
-
awesome job! if you rebuild that 304, be sure to use Chevy valves/guides, 1.84 intake, 1.5 exhaust, and positive seals. A healthy 304 is a wonderful thing! good luck, gz
-
Yes, I have to rebuild one of my 304´s... this one has been in a CJ for some time and not driven for a over ten years... so...
I´d like to have a T5 instead of automatic, but I´d need a flywheel. 360 would be better alternative, but it is not road legal, too much cubics...
Now i have my Sport Eagle in my garage, so this all preparation can happen at the same time... hope so...
-
This is so cool, keep up the good work!
-
Some update...
I have got a T-5 and a brand new flywheel too...
A lot of parts for engine rebuild.... oversize pistons and such...
Need some extra time to get engine and transmission job done...
-
Awesome, Gotta love a V8 for torque and power. Nothing beats it. considering something like it myself.
-

Stop the press.... I don´t have to restore this engine. My friend is selling motor (a 304) from his Rebel The machine (he is getting right stuff under the hood, a 390). New clutch arrived...
Some sunny day I´m going to do engine swap.... 8)
-
Today I heard, that "new" 304 is available! :hello2:
After few weeks I can bring it home. Now I have to do final assembley of my "silver beast" Sport Wagon.
It is this one...

That dual exhaust is a sight to behold!
As the war boys said in Mad Max: Fury Road... "V8! V8! V8!"
