Trip to Plano TX
« on: July 20, 2012, 09:41:29 AM »
Had my daughter give me a car so I decided to go pick it up the only vehicle I have now to tow with is the Eagle
so the wife (Nell) packs the car with food and away we go  the trip down way easy with the exception of a very long drive to Texas
with the car dolly bouncing and banging all the way. after we got there we loaded the car        and after a couple of hours of sleep we start back  with a few stops at rest stops    we finally make it home   the only problem we had was after we hit the mountains we had to turn the air conditioner off to keep her from overheating as you can see it added a lot on mileage to the old girl

Wow, that's one heck of a trek pulling another car. Did Uhaul rent you the tow dolly knowing you were pulling it with the Eagle? I wouldn't think it would meet their criteria.

yes they did it met all the requirements as the hitch is not a home made type is the weight ratio was good.  they said I could pull the 4 door but not the 2 door .

Grrr, those car dollies are a pain when they're empty. Few things on the planet make a more annoying racket.

Its surprising to me that they rented one to you. They're pretty picky about what they allow to tow one of those, since it doesn't have any brakes. Makes for some scary stops if you tow in traffic. I also have experienced the running-hot scenario towing one(Jeep MJ 4.o towing an SX/4), even had to use the heater to help keep the engine temp down, and it was in the summer, in Dallas when I last used one of those confounded car dollies. I swore em off for good after that.

Glad to see you made it without any trouble.

I'll be in Plano about a month from now.  I'll be stopping at a friend's on the way to Texas Motor Speedway.
David and I have discussed dollies previously.  They're possessed.
Glad you made the trip well.

car dollies are a pain but they serve their purpose. When we rentedd the dollie they checked tosee if we could haul the escort and they said it was ok for the 4 door but not the 2 door  I wouldn't think they weight difference would be that much but must be.I don't think I'll make another on soon because of the constant noise of the trailer.   The eagle pulled the load fine until we hit the mountains around Cookville Tn and in 95 degree heat she (Bertha) would get hot had to pull over only once to let her cool off,  only on the long pull up the hills is when she would get hot but on fairly level ground it would only get half way even eith the a/c on.  over all a fun trip.

I was born and raised in Plano.  I'm in Tennessee now but will retire there in a couple of years.  If the pic showes up, it's from the mid-80's.  Me with my black wagon (Bad Carma) and my brother with his tan wagon.

Very nice photo indeed... looks like something that came out of (or should've been in) a magazine!
