Doesn't anyone make a decent 6cyl Tach anymore
« on: November 23, 2011, 09:47:19 AM »
Been looking to start building some custom consoles for the birds and want to add a tach of course. Once I started browsing I noticed there are hundreds of cool looking and inexpensive tachs on the market but they all go to 10,000RPM or higher. That is crazy since the 258 will NEVER see over 4500.  I spent a lot of time looking around and for the $$$ have decided to pick up some used tachs and start playing.

I Will probably end up going with a tach from a late 70's early 80's Jaguar XJ-6 as it is 5,000 RPM max w/ the redline starting at 4500. That's just about perfect. The size and color are good too as to not stand out.

I haven't checked the lighting of it to see if it's the same or close anyway but so far looks like the best solution.

Anyone running aftermarket tachometers that don't read over 5K?

My plan is to build an inlay for the shifter cover that has a tach, oil psi and voltage readout. If there is room I might add a back up sensor since I'm deleting the rear side windows and adding louvers to the wagon.

I put on an aftermarket sunpro tach, that reads up to only 8000, still not 5000, but I like it a lot. And I can adjust it so it can work on 4, 6, 8 cylinder engines.

I run a mini sunpro as well, I've had it for ten years or so now with zero problems.

I picked up some old Jeep OEM units, but I have that mini on the Eagle. It's enough with an automatic to keep an eye on things & adjust the idle. Not enough sweep as I'm used to with the other cars.

Diesel vehicles might be a place to look, but you'd need an adapter.

I do prefer a larger tach, 2 1/8" is too hard to see clearly at a glance.

I'm playing with a couple of ideas right now.  I'll keep everyone posted.

I'm working with somebody to see if he'll put together an LED bargraph tach, and he'll be able to build it for whatever RPMs I want.  If there was enough interest he might be able to build multiple units.

Update.  I purchased a tach for a Jaguar XJ series with the 4.2.  6cyl tach, nice size, 5000rpm max, colors are right and they are readily available.

I'd definitely like the bar graph tach.

Between 7 Eagles   :)   I'll figure out something.....

Gronk, what size is the Jaguar tach? Sounds like it matches up well with the 258

I'll take some pics and post.  I'm in Denver today so I can't measure right now but it might even mate up in the gauge cluster nicely. I'm planning on making an insert for the center console/shifter cover for it and a few other gauges.

Auto Meter makes some low rev tachs. Made in USA still.
Adjustable for 4,6,8 and cylinder use.

http://www.autometer.com/cat_gaugelist.aspx?sid=12&opid=6&szid=3

I've been using their Z-Series 6000rpm tach for a few years now, works great.
Would have gotten the 5000rpm one if it didn't say "Diesel" on it.
Still haven't gone above 5000rpm lol. Although with my new motor with the TFI upgrade, I've been able to make power up to 4600rpm.

I have a diagram for a LED tach with all the specs. I was going to build one 10 years ago for hood mounting that was weather proof.
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!
