coil for TFI
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:56:14 PM »
The how to gives the Accel coil part number as 8140.  It has the post terminals.
Does anyone have the part number for the same coil except with spade connectors?

Thunderstorms are returning with a vengance.  I'm getting off and unplugging things again.

If you are going to replace the coil, why not get the pertronix coil? It's roughly the same price, and double the voltage.

I was under the impression that in order to get the benefit of the additional voltage it's necessary to make some wiring changes.  I want to keep it as close to plug and play as possible.

What year should I tell the parts person in order to get the ignition parts for the Ford 300?

Thanks.  It's difficult to get parts by part number.  If it ain't in the computer it don't exist.
I'll see if the local folks can find a Petronix coil on their shelf.

Can anyone give a recommendation for summitracing.com?  Seems like I've seen it mentioned on here.  They have the Pertronix coils.

Jim, I've had the Accel and 3 MSD coils fail on me. Go with an OEM Ford coil. I may have a spare on to give you. I went to hei and now gonna try TBI lol. PM your address, if I find it I will send it
Hope for the best,

You can also order the Pertronix FlameThrower straight from the manufacturer's website with the correct resistance for our application. Took about 4 days for mine to get shipped to Michigan. Well worth the wait, it fires up almost before I can turn the key now.

Did it help with acceleration? Does the engine run more smooth now? And finally, did you notice a change in gas mileage?

I have the whole setup on my '86, but it was put on BEFORE I got the Eagle.  I think the dist. cap was ordered from like a '85 ford 300 I6.   The funny thing is, there's no adapter plate on mine.  just the dist. cap, button, and coil.  I'm wondering if they changed the whole thing right down.

Maybe when it gets nice out (it's bloody snowing again) I'll get some pics, and post them.

I'm almost sure my coil is the 8140.  It's the yellow one.

Helped smooth out a little bit, and definitely noticeable in colder weather with easier starts and runs smoother in cold. Gas mileage barely improved enough to notice, but it did seem to give it a tick more power when you hit the go button.  I can easily hit 60 in under 2 minutes now   ;D

I now have the parts.  I got most from Advance by telling them parts for a 1985 Ford pu with 300.
I got the coil from summitracing today.  I ordered it Tues morning and the web site said it should arrive Thurs or Fri.  It come Thurs.
I don't know when I'll get to do the work.  I have other stuff to do part of this weekend.  Part of my hesitation is because it is doing so well after replacing the ICM.
