Title: 1985 Eagle Sedan Fleet model project
Post by: TEagle85 on August 17, 2015, 12:14:30 PM
About a year ago I picked up this Eagle from a suburb in Chicago where I live. I remember wanting a eagle wagon bad when I was in highshool so I was pretty excited to pick this one up for $1200.  Needed a lot of work but ran and had less then 100,000 miles. The guy I bought it from didn't know much about it. Said it was sitting in a barn for 10 years and he used if for two years to plow his driveway and his neighbors. Yeah there was a plow on that thing. The two winters caused a bit of rust and all the modifications he did to the car to fit the 31in tires and plow were shoddy to say the least. Im not a good welder but the stuff he did to lift the thing were pretty bad.

I drove it home and the next day took it for a drive and stalled in the streets in the middle of summer in Chicago, after a tow home I started to dig into the electrical and didnt stop until I went through every inch of the car. Of course the project is never finished but I was happy to get to a point this past week which allowed me to take a 500 mile road trip to Michigan and back. Not one problem came up.  Thought Id share a few photos, should have taken more to show my process but you'll get the idea.

ECM Test bypass and got rid of all this with Gronk's Carb kit. No more cruise control or AC. I like it simple under the hood.

Under the hood. Cleaned up pretty good considering what it looked like under there when I got it.

Got rid of the carpet and did a truck liner coat. New gauges, a CB, new steering wheel, new headliner,  Need a sunroof now.

new tires 235 75 15s on stock rims. Next I need to get rid of the 2.35 gearing. I will say after my road trip the gearing was great for the distance running about 65mph at a tad under 2000 rpm. Took it on some gnarly off road trails and was surprised on how it performed. Should take it easy though considering that gearing.
Next project find a front differential so I can do the swap.

Not happy with the stock shackles to I replaced the leaf springs and searched around for CJ7 parts to make the swap. Cut the mounting "bump" from the body and made some 1/4 in steel inserts to mount everything up.

How she's sitting now. Had some fun with it finally after 15 months sitting in the garage.

Anyone have any ideas on how many Sedan Fleet models are out on the road today?  Ive searched the internet and I have not seen one!

Nice work....

Ok I gotta ask because I am still stuck on tire size.... That is all stock height correct??  Do you rub with those tires at all??

It is stock height or close to it.   There were 2in lift blocks in the rear and spacers on the front springs to fit the 31in tires that were on there. After I took all that off the 235s fit fine BUT the fenders have been trimmed a bit.  I still need to do a little more trimming. No problems on the road but if you start working the suspension on some rugged terrain it rubs a little.
I plan to add a leaf to the rear at some point and maybe get some new springs for the front. I would be happy with another 3/4 in lift. For now there's not enough rubbing to worry about it.

Wow thats a good looking eagle! i am the owner of a 82 Sedan and looking into a wagon or another local sedan at the moment. They are far and few compared to the wagon model..

hi, I have had an 82 Sedan Limited, since 1994, my wife drove it for ten years, then i drove it , it is now rusted beyond saving, but, I am bringing back an 84  Sedan right now, soup to nuts full restification. I love your car! Not enough sedans out there, most folks went for the wagon, or the SX4, long story short, after about a year of engine rebuilding, trans rebuilding, front end rebuilding, interior renewal,  a year ago!, vinyl top getting rid of, drive  train renewal, and almost countless thousands of dollars, (ok, not countless, but a lot!), the beast fired up today! and moved under its own power (not far, front axle still not in), btw, another rebuild! and btw, i rebuilt the PS pump myself, no leaks!, new variable ratio steering gearbox too. Did I mention untold thousands of dollars, whew, but....It's ALIVE! A 1984 Sedan, total production roughly 4200, how many are left out there? maybe 30%?, probably less. You have one of the coolest cars in the country, no joke.  This 84 still has its Carter BBD, only because there is nothing wrong with it. On my 82 I did the Motorcraft swap, before Gronk or any of the online guys., back in 2000. I figured out how to make it run, and it ran for over 15 years, and is still ok today, basically the car died around the engine. If/when the Carter goes on my 84, I will go again to the Motorcraft carb., best carburetor ever made, in my opinion. Simplicity is a virtue!. Anyway, love your car, enjoy! gz

Saw the 85 Sedan numbers were about 2600. I have to think that there has to be at least 5 Sedan Fleet models still on the road. I've seen sedans but none with the opera window delete, and vinyl bench seats. Thanks for the "Coolest car in the country" compliment Ha.
I know what you mean about the cost. I have a gallon zip-lock bag stuffed to the brim with every single receipt. I am terrified to add it up but I know multiple thousands. Best just leave them in the bag until I sell it. No plans to do that yet but I know myself and my tendency to not hold on to things. This one might be different though.
Of course the project is never finished. Would love to start digging into the drivetrain next.  5 sp manual swap would be a dream.

Back at it with a update. since then I custom made front and rear wheel mudflaps from a semi mud flap and Ill post something on that soon.
Now Im in the process of rebuilding the trans and finding a NP242 to bolt up to it.

Yesterday I pulled the two and starting the journey of a rebuild. Got a book coming in the mail today all about the 904 and 727 trans so some reading to do.
Ill try to document the build because I plan to go all out on the stock TF998.

Anyone do a manual shift valve in one of those?? I know its not a drag car but Id enjoy the shifting, simplicity and "performance". Its some money though I know.

Whatever upgrades and parts I can find... that's whats going in it. So if anyone has any suggestions it would be great. Ive already got a lot of info from other threads.

Next, motor rebuild.

Could you expand on your process for switching from carpet to the painted, textured flooring?  What products did you use? What underlay type of coating? How is the interior on a hot summer day? Looks awesome!

The carpet was pretty torn up and worn, Figured if I re did it I would tare it up again. I like it, no worries of mud, dirt, snow, and all that. I do need to drill a small drain hole in the floor pans. I do have weathertech floor mats down so that helps a little with sound vibration and comfort. I imagine you could make your own heavy duty rubber mats and shape them however you want with some cardboard templates. Maybe oversized to creep onto the trans housing and under the seats to help with more sound?

To pull all the carpet you have to remove all the panels close to the floor, kicker panels, side pillars, and anything thats keeping the carpet down. Seats and seat belts too.  I'm sure if you want to do some planning and masking you can get away with leaving some of that stuff.  Good time to patch any rust areas too.
Clean everything with some degreaser as best as you can and sand for adhesion. I used a roll on truck bed liner kit from Autozone. Think it was around $100, gave me 3 coats and a little extra for touch ups.

As for comfort this car is one step above a covered wagon. I've pretty much stripped this car down to the bare essentials and thats how I want it.  Its nice to be reminded no matter what car your in your really just in a steel box flying 18 inches above a concrete highway at 70mph. Keeps you on your toes.

Got my new Torque converter in from Precision of New Hampton, I called them up and they took a stock rebuild and welded on a Allison trans neck for some added strength.
here is the site. http://gopnh.com/  cost around $200.

Also decided since I already have half of the car apart I might as well get the motor rebuilt. All stock but bore out the pistons as much as needed (little bit of a lip going on in the indie wall) and add a comp cam. Ill keep it updated when that gets underway. First step is to make sure the block and head are goo to go for a rebuild then order parts.

Trans is done, redid the valve body with a Trans-go TF-2 kit. Redid all the bushings, clutches, oil pump, o-rings, and bands with a "high performance" rebuild kit from Oregon Performance Transmission. A lot of parts there but very hard to do business with since they don't communicate over the phone.
New Torque converter as mentioned above.
Here is how it looks now, not really tightened all the way down yet if you look close. I want to pull the oil pump housing again to make sure the new bushing and oring are still good. Went in a little rough.

Also got the engine pulled. Its getting picked up tomorrow by the machine shop. Going to first get it cleaned and checked. I have a bit of a lip on the cylinder walls so I plan to get it bored .020 over with sealed power pistons. Also sealed power rockers, Comp cam kit. Melling oil pump, and I got a new aluminum valve cover.
On its way!

You're really going to town on the sedan. It looks great! There's always something to do on a 30+ year old car.........my son is finding that out on his SX/4.

yeah I know, its a problem. I have like 20 things going on between the trans, engine, transfercase, redoing the fuel line, putting in a new aluminum radiator, and trans cooler. Motor should be done mid next week. So while its out I'm patching a few rust spots near the control arm. Then its getting it all back in and making sure everything mates up nicely. I know thats going to be the tricky part.
Think Im going to drop the motor in first, then lift the car to remount the front diff and slide in the trans.  Drop and fire it up!

Engine bay is cleaned up with a few patches made and paint applied.
Got the motor back last week, bored .030 over with the comp cam. Everything is pretty much new.
Got the motor in by myself with the help of "Beaverseagle" engine hoist that he dropped off and let me borrow. Much appreciated man!

Also had ARP headbolts put on and sealed power rocker bridges so I can run the aftermarket alum valve cover. Sooooo nice after dealing with that pos plastic cover.

The original long dipstick snapped off in the block. So I got a new one for a 00' 4.0.  Shorter so I got some weight savings on the front end.

Hooked all the accessories back up and hit all the brackets with POR15 and all the attaching hardware I got new grade 8 bolts. Looking pretty clean in there. Super pumped. Never owned a vehicle this clean.

Sealing up the front dif with por15 and swapping the gear oil and gasket. That goes back in followed by the rebuilt trans. Since I never rebuilt a trans before this one let alone knew how they work, Im crossing my fingers everything is fine. Seemed like a pretty straight forward process so I should be ok.
Had me worried working on the valve body with that TF-2 shift kit. They have you drilling and grinding stuff down. Makes you feel like your doing something you shouldn't. Time will tell.

Next is the transfercase. Tempted to just leave alone. I do have a rebuild kit but still need the chain. Which is funny because what started this whole rebuild was the sloppy chain in the Tcase and thats going to be the one thing I dont do.

Thinking of holding on to the rebuild kit and putting it on a NP229.
Also Im having a hard time finding a NP129 chain. The one I did find said it would also fit a NP229. Under that logic will a NP229 chain work in my NP129?
Just to save the headache of tracking a 229 down, reclocking it and all makes me want to just rebuild the one I have. Maybe later in life Ill upgrade the eagle again with other stuff. Viscus coupler feels fine, plenty of resistance.

More work done, plugging away at attaching all the engine accessories. No surprises there.
Got the new radiator in and just matched up a hose up top. Bottom Hose will require a little bit of engineering. Added a trans cooler.
I added barbed fittings on the trans and cooler so Ill be running rubber hoses from cooler to trans. I have some reflective heat shielding that runs over the rubber lines. Ill just have to make sure the exhaust has plenty of room to pass the hoses. Going to need like 12ft to get the job done.
Painted the bumpers with truck bed lining and picked up some KC lights. Excited to get those on there.

Spent a bit of time redesigning the intake manifold pre-heater. Since the conductive discs  on the old set up shattered I found a small heating element that runs 12v and heats up to 70c. Close to operating temp. I used high heat epoxy to hold the element in the housing and pounded out a new bottom plate since the old one was rusted out. Made some new gaskets too.
Almost done just need to pop those rivets and pound them flush.
I plan to run it to a switch inside the car so I can manually turn it on. Switch it on before start up in the winter and off once up to temp.
Another toggle switch added to my panel!! Yay!!!

Forgot to post this but found the build sheet under the carpet. Indeed a Fleet car.
Also found a live 38cal round. Clues to its previous life? With the hole in the trunk for a whip antenna maybe police car? My friends mom used to work along the power lines in MI back in the day and she said they used Eagles.
I know its been in Indiana the majority of its life so who knows.

Hi, yeah, i put in the pre 81 short oil level dipstick into my new 84 258 as well, just 'cause the looong one it originally came with was badly corroded, I think it gave me an extra 5 HP ! :) Piece is actually pretty hard to find. the tube, not the dipstick. Finally found a vendor wayyyy out west, as in Washington state, who deals mostly in FSJ parts. anyway, good luck y'all! gz

Its ready to roll!  Took it out on its first drive yesterday. Shifts great, runs great, good and smooth on the highway, and loud as heck. Still some smoke coming out of the tail pipe when started and when the pedal is hit hard. Motor still needs some breaking in and there is probably some assembly lube in the oil, plus the break in additive. Ill worry about that after 1000 miles.
Everything is rebuilt and upgraded. Added up all my receipts over the last 2 years and ohhhhh man, was not expecting that. Oh well. New car.

I have the grill back on, was just too eager to get it out of the garage yesterday.
Heading up to MI for the 4th with some 70s boogie vans. Convoying with CB radios. Ill have some adventure photos to show soon.

Also if anyone has any leads on differentials other then the 2.35 gearing located in the Midwest Im all ears. Hate the current gearing, love everything else.

Before he modified it for the demo derby.
They are from the southwest and once I started to clean the dirt off I found them to be completely rust free.
Gears look good on the inside. I'm going to just do a rebuild and call it good. I wont replace the actual gears.

On the engine:
After about 1500 miles on the rebuild motor its still burning quite a bit of oil. Not sure if its the "molly" rings that are still not broken in or if its a issue with the valve seals. So I pulled the head back off and brought it back into them to rebuild and check out. Kinda :censored: I had to do that. No word back yet but I really hope its not the pistons. I really dont want to pull that our again.

On the Carb:
Im done with that crap.
had the 2100 from Gronk but thay are not true motorcrafts just Chinese carbs and I had a few issues.
To try and solve I bought 2 more carbs from AMC jeep and tried to Frankenstein another together.
never got it in but put the better looking 1.08 venture from the real thing to the chinese carb in there now. Just a much better cast part.
Floods like crazy after 2 min of running. I think its got to be something to do with my float. I swapped to brass.

Anyway Im sick of dealing with it so the car sits for the winter until I save enough to rebuild those diffs and buy a fuel injection kit.
Wish me luck, I just want a eagle I can drive from here to Alaska if I want to. Done messing with this thing haha.

Sorry - hit the wrong key before completing & this may have been sent twice. There's a red line appearing under these words & I can't get rid of it.  I live in a suburb of Chicago but am not the one who sold you the car. Either that car was in better shape than you thought or you've done alot of nice work - I think the latter. You've given me some encouragement. I've got to drop a transfer case & have been dreading it for the physical reasons of getting it back in. I see we share the same motorcycle jack so that should help.

I think Im going to go for one of the ebay kits. A little pricey but Its all new, ready to set up, and I dont have to run around junk yards tracking stuff down.

AMC1  I think it was a little of both. The body is in pretty good shape but I had to do some patching here and there after a more then a few midwest winters.
Keep plugging away on that eagle. Im lucky enough to have a garage and little need for a car here in the city so I can really tear into stuff and take my time.

If your in the area join the "Chicago Chapter". Nice to know of other eagles in the area.

The Eagle has been nesting for the last 4-5 months. I had carb issues and went crazy rebuilding 2 others in the process. I have Gronks kit plus two AMC MC2100 carbs. One for parts and one to rebuild. Figure a original would be better then the Chinese version. I never got to testing it out but in the process spent a few hundred buying rebuild kits and a kit to add a better brass bushing insert in to the carb body where the butterfly flaps pivot.  I know the parts are good. Just having a hard time tuning.

So while I was thinking about that I took the head off the engine and brought it back to the builders so they could check it out since I was having oil burning issues over the summer after a full motor rebuild. They said it looked fine and added better valve seals. I have a suspicion they did mess something up, hopefully took care of it and sent my on my way.

I have the checked head back on the block and the valve cover on. Next I need to attach manifolds. I picked up a Offenhauser for $100. Its from a older motor with the other exhaust manifold. Found that out the hard way. So the mounting platforms are different heights between the intake and exhaust.

Here are some pictures of the solution, figure it might help someone out. After trying a few different ideas I saw something similar to this on another site.

I gave up on the carb. So the car will sit until I save enough for a self tuning EFI kit. $$$$$$ but I cant wait to not mess with carbs again. Plus all the other benefits of EFI

Its a 4 barrel for a 4.2 off ebay. I figure with the offy intake should add a little power as well. Next I need to rebuild the front and rear 3.31 differentials I picked up, that will most likely be a late summer project.

Got the EFI in. Runs like a champ. Better then ever and I haven't even test drove it yet. I ran a new exhaust last night with a flowmaster to quite it a bit but its still loud. not as bad as the glass pack with a deeper tone. I like it.

Only thing left to do is run my cable for the kickdown lever on the trans. Should be straight forward. Ill update this more with some process and stuff thats under the hood and car.

Pretty pumped on this system. Pretty trick touch screen too. You can view all data live and adjust a lot of the settings. Highly recommended so far. Ask me again in 1000 miles, hopefully I feel the same.

So far so good. That bog when accelerating is completely gone, I can press the peddle down as far and as fast as I like without issues. Its driving exactly how I wanted so far. Acceleration is sooooo much better.  The computer is still "learning" and if I slam the gas long enough it has a so slight sputter. Cool thing is at the red light you go to your touch screen on the dash, go to "fuel parameters"  and click up a couple notches on the "accelerating fuel" option. Then good to go.

Only issue I see is it runs hot. Thats probably because of a few things.

1.   no fan shroud (yet)
2. the water temp sensor is in the thermostat housing. Grabbed one from a 95 Jeep. so guessing its a little hotter there

the temp gauge on the dash reads cold at the same time though.   running average of 203 deg on the computer screen. so should be fine.

Going to drive it 100 miles this afternoon to go camping so that will the next test.

Lots of compliments on the streets in Chicago. Got stopped 100 feet form my house and a guy was yelling how that was his dream car when he was a kid.
yesterday at the car wash the owner asked what kind of car it was.   He thought it was Japanese and I had to explain American Motors to him.  After he gave me tokens for a free wash. haha.

Put about 200 miles on the Eagle over the weekend. Ran amazing. After its warmed up it starts a little tough. Have to crank it over for a few seconds before it fires up. There are also options in the computer to adjust the "cold start fuel enrichment" and "cranking fuel enrichment" Ive been playing around with that a little but it starts every time so still happy about that. The other thing I noticed is the voltmeter on the computer shows Im running like 11.4v down to 10.2 volts during operation. Was thinking I need a more powerful alternator. Mine is brand new but with the fuel pump and computer might need more charging power.
When I take a voltmeter directly to the battery when the car is off I was seeing 12.7 so might just be a bad reading on the computer's part.

Its the EZ EFI kit from FAST. They have a "jeep" version but I got the other version. Same thing but has 4 injectors instead of the 2 the jeep version has.
Jeep version also comes with a adapter plate for the stock intake manifold. Since I have the offy intake I didn't need the adapter plate.

What I did was just leave fuel injectors 3 and 4 unplugged and in the start up settings said I had the Jeep version.
So if I want I have the capability of 4 injectors if I ever put it on another motor. The guys at FAST said this was the way to do it with that kit and the 4.2. 4 injectors are a bit too much I guess.

For about $300 more you get their fuel system.  Lines, filter, pump, fittings. I decided to build my own system. About $100 more and you get better parts and you get to choose what goes in. Maybe overkill but I set it up with all stainless braided line and AN fittings a nice fuel pressure regulator from Fuelab and a Walbro fuel pump.

The kit with the better touch screen and newer version of the throttle body is on sale for $899 on Summit and eBay stores. This is over half off from the normal price and seems to be selling out. Im guessing they have overstock or are coming out with a newer kit.  Well worth it and a  suprise to get it at that price.

I was driving it all over the city today. No problems.

EFI kit still exceeding expectations. Im heading on a long road trip to MI tomorrow and one of the days Im there we are going to check out Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Going to take the eagle even though I know it will be worthless on the hills with the 2.35 gearing I can at least roll around the shoreline and check out some of the rigs out there. Some crazy stuff the weekend of the 4th.

Well dunes were fun. Could manage but gearing needs to be swapped. On Thursday I broke a front axle two tracking through the woods. Luckily my friend brought one up to the cabin from Chicago a couple days later so swapped that out and continued on. Prob about 500 miles over all I think, plugs are still fouling from burning oil after running it hard on the highways for 4 hours straight. Engine should be broken in by now so Im thinking there are some oil issues related to the head. Ill keep driving it anyway. Next step after gearing and susp. might be a stoker build.

The Eagle has been well.   Now that winter is here Im ready to get some new Differentials under the chassis because that 2.35 is killing me.

I have a set of stock differentials from a Eagle. 3.31 gearing,  which is about where I want to be.   Want some climbing, tire turning , passing abilities but at least be able to roll 65mph on the highway.

Now I can do 75 mph at 2100 rpm.

If I can keep the rpms under 2600 at 65mph and have low end there Id be happy.

So. The front 3.31 I have I will rebuild and match to the rear.

The help I need is picking between or rather being pushed one way or the other in differential selection.

Ive been doing some reading and seems my best choices are at Dana 44 (too expensive/ hard to find i hear so thats out)

So that leaves a Chrysler 8.25 or the Ford 8.8.

I really like the idea of the ford 8.8 but really dont like that they are a inch shorter on each side and that may be the deal breaker. I am already running 1in wheel spacers on the rear to get what I want in stance. I do like that they are everywhere and a common swap with tons of info. Plus they have discs on most.

Other option being a 8.25 from a 97 or newer cherokee. which Im leaning towards because of the width.

Ultimate plans are a 4.6 stroker, 727 or other trans/ T-case swap.  Id love to rally cross this car someday. I know the purest will hate me but Id love to strip this car down, roll cage, etc.

What do you think, suck up the width issue for a much stronger diff with the 8.8

Or go for the 8.25?

I should note, grinding and welding are no problem and disc brakes would be great too.
Anyone know of drive shaft issues with either swap?
another thing to consider but I can have a shop take care of that also so not a deal breaker.
Tire size on there now is 235/75/15
998 trans with lockout converter

Thanks Everyone!

Think I made up my mind.  Im going to run the Ford 8.8 with 3.55 gears.
Tons of those axles around, bullet proof for the eagle., Disc brakes for the rear.
Its 1in shorter then the dana 35.   So Id have to run 1.5in spacers for now and hope to correct a bit more with offset when I get new rims.

Only thing I need to look into is if I can put a 3.55 in my 3.31?

Once I go over 3.31 Do I need a new carrier?

Im sure Ill find out before someone replies. Not sure if people follow this but I will update with the rear diff swap.

from what I understand, is the carrier is the same from 2.71 up to 3.55
of course that's only what I have read here on the forum not first hand experience

I'll be following too.  I did a big trip recently, and the 2.35's are the weak point for me.  I'm also running 235/75/15's, but I don't have the fuel injection so my power is likely lower than yours.  I've been considering 3.07's, so I'm curious what made you choose the 3.55's.

Here is some math I did for 3rd gear speeds at 2600 RPM with different gearing:

I'm jealous that you have some Eagle axles that are not 2.35's.  I've been looking and those are tough to find!

I ended up pulling a 3.55 from a 2000 ford explorer on Wednesday.  They had 24 Explorers in the yard 95-01 So there were plenty. I plan to go back and pull a limited slip carrier from another one out there soon. the whole axle disc brakes and all cost me 1.5 hours and $118.

As for the gearing I'm just trying to find a balance of offroadability and drivability. 3.08 would be my other choice since I do tend to do more Highway.

My trans has a lockout converter so I have the 3 gears but once over 45-50 the converter locks and Im 1:1 ratio. So almost like a 4sp.

I think with the 3.55 I should be ok moving 65-70 without RPMS too high. At least until I get a updated trans down the line.

Finally getting around to the differential rebuilds. I dropped the front Dana 30 off at the shop to rebuild from the 3.31 to a 3.08.  The guy is having a hard time finding a ring and pinion for it and I thinks its only because of the AMC Eagle confusion. I mentioned Ive seen a ton on eBay and to check it out. Am I wrong?  Can I put a 3.08 in the front? A 3.08 is going on the rear Ford 8.8.

Also if I were to order the ring and pinion myself from summit or eBay anything I should take notice of? I saw options for short or long shaft, high and low pinion.   I have a feeling this thing will somehow end up in the shop for months lol,   Luckily I can still drive the eagle with the current differentials.

You need a Dana 30 low and long pinion gears set. They were found in Jeep CJ's also.

Now that the differentials are underway its time to think wheels. I do like the look of some basic steel race rims and plan to go with something like this.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/bsw-57rf375/overview/

Problem Im having is totally understanding offset vs backspacing.

What I know:

On the car now are stock steel rims,  stock differentials. Front I like the stance so we'll leave that alone for now. The rear will be the one to figure out.
On the rear I have 1 in Spacers because the rear always looked too narrow with those flairs, Id actually like 1.5 in spacers to knock them out a tad more.

The future ford 8.8 is 1.25 narrower then the current Dana 35.   So all things the same Id need 1.75 in spacers now with stock rims on each side.

I want to get rid of the spacers and thought a deeper rim in the rear would look cool compared to the front with stock offset.

I know the stock rims are 6in wide and all the newer rims I am looking at are 7in so I have to take that into consideration.

Tires I am running are Goodyear Wranglers  235 75 15

The idea of a wider rim I like as well.

If the stock wheel is 4.5in back spacing and I want it to stick out  2 inches (or 1.75) more would I look for 6.5in backspacing?   Or would I get 4.5in back spacing with  50.8 offset?

Minus or plus offset?

Open to any suggestions and not afraid to beat fender corners into submission.

This page does a pretty good job of explaining offset and backspacing.

http://www.trucktrend.com/how-to/chassis-suspension/0706tr-wheel-backspace-and-offset/

With regards to your last questions,  the smaller the backspace (distance from the back of the wheel to the mounting surface) the more your wheel will stick out towards the fender.  A positive offset means the mounting surface is closer to the fender, and the wheel/tire will be more tucked into the wheel well.  A negative offset means the mounting surface is closer to inside of the wheel, which will make the wheel/tire sit closer to the fender.

Hope this helps!

Backspace is the distance from your inner tire mount flange to the wheel hub flange. Offset is the distance from the center of the wheel to the hub flange. So more backspace will suck your wheel in more, more offset will suck your wheel in more. To convert backspace to offset subtract half the wheel width from it. Reverse for offset. So on an 8" wheel with 5" backspacing, 5"-(8"/2)=1". Often offset is measured in MM so 1"*25.4=25.4mm offset aka +25.4 (probably rounded to +25mm or et25).

This helps., thank you.  Maybe the redundancy confuses me. Do I only have to worry about one of those measurements?

The wheels id like to get only come in 3" and 3.75" offset.   7in wide. Think I am going to try it out and figure it out from there.

As of now the front top inner tire is close to the steering knuckle and ball joint area, with a 1in wider rim bringing it closer I think I can afford to go out .75 of a inch

The rear Id use the 3" offset.

Edit: just saw there are more options for offset with the 8 in wide version. My tire will take a max width of 8in for a rim so I will explore that as a option. Im more concerned with getting the front close to how I have it. The rear I have some room.

Ill post some close fender pictures soon to show clearance. Or any of the other photos on this thread show its current set up.

I have the same size tires, 235/75-15's.  I found some Jeep Cherokee rims used.  they are 15x7's and I think 4-1/2" backspacing just like the originals.  If you are not going to change your tires, I would stay away from the 8" wide rims.  It was tough enough to get the fenders cut away to clear the tires with just the 7" wide rims.  Plus, 8" wide wheels won't change the tire contact patch at all.

I think a lot of the Jeep Wrangler and Cherokee wheels were the same size, up until 2001 for the Cherokee and 2006 for the Wrangler.  You may want to look at some of those.  The base models came with steel wheels and may have a similar look to the ones you posted.

Ok, pictures soon but getting on my way with the diffs.   Front is rebuilt with 3.08, painted and ready to go in.  The rear 8.8 is rebuilt with a ford racing limited slip carrier, 3.08 gearing, slotted and drilled rotors, and a Ford mustang aluminum diff cover.

I also just ordered a add a leaf kit from  springsandthings.com, with it is coming some coil springs for the front to match,  got the A/C versions and some new poly spring seats.

Next step is install the add a leaf, mark and cut to length, (they are sending longer ones so I can cut to length). Once those are in I can get the rear diff under there with wheels to set pinion angle. Once happy Ill tack on the new spring perches and shock mounts I picked up from Summit.   Hoping no drive shaft length issues will arise. looks like the 8.8 is about a inch longer from center to u joint center.
Ill tack in place the spring and shock mounts, pull it all out and burn into place permanently.

Then Ill run the hydraulic lines and then the parking brake lines,  Should be good to go? Anything I am missing?

Big question I wanted to ask is about the existing master cylinder on the new all disc brake set up.   I do have a adjustable proportioning valve installed for the rear brakes I put in a while ago just because, think it will help me out here. Eventually Id like to do the hydroboost thing but will stock stuff work for now?

I should also note I got some slotted rotors for the front to even the performance out with the drilled and slotted rear.

Thanks guys!

On the SAS Eagle I used to own, it had a Dana 44 up front and 8.8 out back with 4 wheel disc brakes. The stock master worked great. Even with 35" tires, it stopped much better than the other 2 Eagles I have owned. I screwed around and got a different master from a Ford Econoline, if I recall, based on some Internet searching and the braking stayed the same.

Got the diffs back, did not get them in before I put 600 miles on the Eagle this weekend. Thats ok, one last hurah for the 2.35 gearing.

How does that gear mesh look?   Thats form the shop and Im not sure if I should spend the time to correct it or if its fine the way it is.

What do you guys think?

makes me more nervous about the front. He said he got it to a point where he was "happy".

Installing a motor oil heat sink behind the front bumper for a little added and needed cooling today.  Cant wait to get these diffs in.

I wouldn't be happy with that pattern in either picture.  But I'm a perfectionist.  I pulled a "good enough" pattern to do a 0.001" change to get it dead on when I was setting up the gears in my XJ.

Called the guy up and he already knew what I was talking about, said he spent some time on it and consulted a few differential shops and friends, supposedly not off for a 8.8. Ill take his word for it, and bring it back if I get some noise.

put about 600 miles on this weekend, ran like a champ and was lucky to pass through a town where I saw a 5sp manual setup from a eagle for a good price,  already pulled. so pretty pumped about that.

I forgot to grab the plate that goes between the bell housing and motor. but hes going to ship it.
Im sure its a non world class T5 and have not read a lot of great stuff on the t5 in general. I do like how light it is though. This car is more of a dirt road ripper then a rock crawler so not sure if Ill have issues with the t5 but to cover my bases for future power upgrades under the hood I think Ill try and go with an AX-15. Ill have to do some homework though and see if it will bolt to that bell housing, also what transfer case Ill need to search for since Ill be upgrading that at the same time of the trans swap. A new driveshaft will be needed also Im sure.

Not rushing into this project just yet since I still have that 8.8 and front diff to get in first.

until then the TF998 in there now will do just fine.   Had to jump on that manual find, last piece of the puzzle.

What trans would you run?

If I went the AX15 route would all this stuff be pointless to have (bell housing specifically) except the pedal set up?

Should I find a worldclass T5 to put in and call it good?

also see anything I may be missing for the swap?

I do like the idea of a t5 but dont like the idea of it breaking if i want to have some fun dumping the clutch and giving it a little heck.

Got the add-a-leaf added to my spring pack and the 8.8 mounted underneath to get a idea of ride hight and to adjust the pinion angle before I tack the perches and shock mounts with the welder.

Do not like how high it sits now in the rear, I know the front will lift a inch or so once I get those new springs in but still too high for my liking. I think the stance was perfect before but maybe up a inch.

I think Im getting at least 1 or 1.5 from the swap alone. The new perches sit about a inch higher then the stock Dana 35. Also the thicker axle tubing on the 8.8 has to account for something.

Ill remove the add a leaf from the pack and set aside for the future if needed. Maybe Ill cut it down and add to the second spot.
less lift but still some added strength? Mostly wanted it to be able to take some weight in the rear while still being a little level. Air shocks are probably better for that Id guess.

The other spot Im keeping a eye on is the rear calipers and how close they are to the spring. I bounced the heck out of the rear with no interference and once the pinion angle is set Im afraid it might get closer. in that picture the pinion is pointed way higher then it will be set at, just from slipped a bit after rotating on the jack.

I remember having to push the leaf springs in a bit to get the pin to center on the dana 35 perches after I fabricated the rear shackles from the CJ7. Ill probably mount the new perches in a 1/4in in or so from there to give me a little more room. Then just force them in a tad when setting the axle in the last time.
