Would you choose a lock-up or non-lock-up transmission
« on: February 06, 2012, 09:13:15 PM »
Apparently my 1988 258 has a 998 non-lockup trans - and the trans is sketchy
So- here's the question - how would you vote (personally)
and why - when having the opportunity to go lock-up or non-lock-up
that is if you were to rebuild/replace your 904 or 998?
PRO'S----CON'S
thanks in advance
Jerry

I would go non lockup. reason being the hub on the torque convertor is stronger. i tore up a lockup hub,so i guess i am biased

Did not know this. I guess it's a good thing mine's a non-lockup, because my trans is already in danger enough!

Lockup with a brazed in billet necked converter (tell them it's for an '80 Cherokee with 6 cyl, 999 and tow package) Medium stall and put the spring kit in that moves the lockup closer to 55 mph, IF you highway drive. It'll feel like an overdrive kicking in. I got mine from Seatac trans here back in '97 and hauled a monster trailer with it (wish I'd had that trans and tcase in my Eagle!)
AMC/Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental!

man that sounds sweet - sorry to mix apples and oranges but - I'm always (even after 30 year) still looking for a 5th gear in my old 4 speed 73 shovelhead - but a 5 speed is 2 g's and a 6 speed Baker trans for that is 3500 bucks

1981 kammback, got a vibration when car hits 55-60mph under acceleration, settles down after ill let off the gas. checked steering stab and all bushings etc(but haven't checked balance of rear and front drive lines)
im wondering if the lockup tc is the issue.
