search for Dakota VSS on this forum they have something that looks like it is what you need but would hook up to the back of the speedo rather than the other end of the speedo cable

after opening up the dash i can see there will NOT be enough room to add a different VSS back there. plus i'd rather stick with the VSS that came with the Howell TBI kit so...

i have found a few housings on ebay but i need to also find a new gear/pinion.

anyone know what tooth count i should be looking for ? (1981 AMC Eagle Kammback, NP119, stock tires)

Most of the NP219/229 speedo gear housings had the screw on cable end that you would need.  They should work in a 119 without too much trouble I would think.  You would need to source a new speedo cable with the appropriate length and ends to replace the factory cable but that shouldn't be too terribly hard.  I know the Full Size Jeeps have multiple lengths available to them because they ran several different drivetrain combinations.  You could pull the whole cable out and measure it, maybe find one for the FSJ on Rock Auto that's close enough.

I might have one or two of those speedo speedo housings. What gear tooth count do you need? I'll have to try to remember where I put them and dig them out.

If I recall, Eagles have a 24-26 teeth driven gear depending on gear ratio.

Its a 28 tooth speedometer gear in my 1981 AMC eagle kammback NP119 transfer case.

Let's see what I can find on the web....
